HISTORIC ROADS IN THE CONTEXT OF CULTURAL ROUTES<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>

SYMPOSIUM OVERVIEW<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>

Cultural Routes make up the connective web of the world\u2019s heritage. They are key elements in tying regions and continents together. In recognition of their importance, the ICOMOS 2008 General Assembly in Quebec City, adopted the International Committee on Cultural Routes (CIIC) Charter on Cultural Routes. CIIC works with other International Scientific ICOMOS Committees to identify and document heritage sites that fall within the multidisciplinary context of cultural routes. CIIC currently has expert members in sixteen countries and aspiring professionals in ten additional countries.<\/span><\/p>

Since the adoption of the CIIC Charter, there have been continued discussions to clarify the relationship between cultural routes and historic roads. Numerous intersections of ideas and terminology have been identified, and in the process historic roads have emerged as a new concept of cultural heritage. This September 2022, the CIIC will hold its Scientific Meeting in the city of Santa Fe, New Mexico-USA. The featured theme will be Historic Roads in the Context of Cultural Routes.<\/span><\/p>

The city of Santa Fe is an ideal location to explore relationships between cultural routes and historic roads. Indigenous people established routes throughout the region, and later Spanish colonists established\u00a0Santa Fe as\u00a0a terminal point of the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro, a cultural route tying the colonial capital of Mexico City to its northern frontier in New Mexico.\u00a0The Old Spanish Trail, the Santa Fe Trail, and Route 66 also converge in Santa Fe, which\u00a0was designated\u00a0an UNESCO\u00a0Creative City in 2005.\u00a0 + More info<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>

Today heritage involves the idea of movement and transmission of knowledge to new generations. The symposium organizers invite ICOMOS Professionals and Emerging Professionals from around the world to better understand the meaning and importance of cultural routes and historic roads and to identify new voices associated with this research topic, both in-person and virtually. The following themes outline the intended content of the meeting where colleagues will have an opportunity to share their research.<\/span><\/p>

1. Abstract submission<\/strong><\/span><\/p>

The extended deadline for submission of abstracts is Friday May 20, 2022.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>

2. Publication of selected presentations<\/strong><\/span><\/p>

The authors of the selected presentations will receive a notification no lather by Friday, June 10, 2022<\/strong><\/span> by email ciicicomos.org@gmail.com<\/a><\/span><\/strong>\u00a0indicating if their abstracts will be accepted as papers. Papers selected for presentation will be published in a digital format.<\/span><\/p>

3. Submission of papers<\/strong><\/span><\/p>

Authors must submit their papers by August 1, 2022\u00a0<\/strong>to ciicicomos.org@gmail.com<\/strong><\/a><\/span>, along with registration payment for non-CIIC members through the CIIC official website: http:\/\/www.ciicicomos.org\/<\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>

Papers may be presented in-person or virtually and will not exceed 15 minutes<\/strong>. At the end of each session, there will be ten minutes for questions and comments.<\/span><\/p>

4. Transportation, Lodging and Travel<\/strong><\/span><\/p>

If you require an official invitation, please notify the symposium organizers and indicate to whom it should be addressed.<\/span><\/p>

The participant grants consent for any photographs taken of them to be used to promote the meeting and committee.<\/span><\/p>

All CIIC members and non-CIIC speakers and general public are required to register by July 1st, 2022<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>
